AVI-8 P-51 Mustang Command Pilot AV-4077-01 Review

Avi-8 is a unique watch brand in a crowded market place, mass-creating Flieger watches alone. Their ethos is that they focus on the history of aviation and the planes and people that shaped that history. Let’s take a look at today’s review of the P-51 Mustang Command Pilot AV-4077-01.

Opening the box to the AVI-8 P-51 Mustang Command Pilot AV-4077-01 was an enjoyable experience as there was lots of natural light. A dial that just glistens in the light of day. Silver in colour with three black subdials and blue highlights with white print to indicate minutes and seconds on two of the dials; seconds and chronometer minute dial. The final dial has white hour indicators on it and all three dials have a circle guilloche pattern.

Dial

Applied black indices are at 5-minute intervals around the dial. At 12 o’clock is a 0 with 3, 6 and 9 at their respective positions. A black printed logo at 8 o’clock and date window between 4 and 5. Below an applied banner at the 5-minute marker on the dial follows 20, 25, 35 and 55 in their respective positions are also in black.

All the indices and black markers are coated in black Superluminova. This makes the P-51 Mustang radiate beautifully as the
picture shows. Hands are sword-shaped and propeller-shaped stainless steel with a black counterbalance.

Case

A 361L stainless steel case with highly polished surfaces and a fixed black bezel with a Tachymeter printed on it. Blue is used for the word TACHYMETER and numbers all in white. The crown guard is sat between the chronograph pushers and is secured by two screws.

The 22mm black watch strap is excellent and in keeping with the watches aesthetics. It is extremely comfortable and the ribs on the side look fantastic. Topped off by a signed buckle.

Likes

● The dial sparkles in natural light.
● Black lume glows and is stunning.
● Very comfortable watch strap.

Dislikes

● Dial looks a little cluttered sometimes less is more.
● Crown guard make it difficult to get to the crown. This is a serious design
flaw.

AVI-8 P-51 Mustang – the WRUK Verdict

My thoughts on the Avi-8 P-51 Mustang Command Pilot are mixed. I like the watch even with its faults. Cluttering of the dial is a major issue that makes the dial unbalanced. Three subdials look great with the highlights drawing the eye. On two of the subdials is a frame with four screws which add to the cluttered feeling. The raised area looks great and adds to the depth of the watch. When the lume is exposed even after the smallest exposure to natural light the balance changes and feels better and lighter.
